The Headline

Vote.org is looking for a dynamic, determined, and compelling Director of Partnerships to lead our partnership building efforts as we expand the scope and impact of our work. The work we are doing is more important heading into 2020 than ever, and we’re growing to meet the needs of the communities and voters we exist to empower. 

The salary range for this position is $115K to $125K dependent on experience. This salary range is for applicants in the Bay Area, New York, and DC markets. Salary will be adjusted based on the cost of living for other markets.

What You’ll Do 

Position Overview

At Vote.org, the Partnerships team is laser-focused on collaborating with companies, organizations, and talented individuals to demonstrably increase voter turnout. Working creatively and across departments, the Director of Partnerships will act in lockstep with Vote.org’s priorities, and in order to accelerate its impact. You will generate overarching strategic plans, as well as project manage their implementation. We’re a small team, meaning you’ll work closely with internal stakeholders and be responsible for sourcing or developing any research, messaging, and collateral that support the Partnerships programs.

We’ve worked with Lyft and Lime on rides to the polls, with CAA and Paramount on the Civic Culture Coalition, with Burton and Levi’s on making Election Day a holiday at their companies, with NextDoor on neighborhood voting maps, and with Samantha Bee on civic engagement apps - reaching hundreds of thousands of potential voters in the process. In this role, you’ll help us determine where to go next. There’s a lot more to do, and we’re just getting started.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop Partnerships Vision + Strategy
    • Work under the direction of and in collaboration with Vote.org’s CEO to develop a comprehensive strategic plan for the Partnerships department that amplifies Vote.org’s strategic initiatives. These currently include, but are not limited to: 
      • Driving forward opportunities in service of Vote.org’s Election Day Holiday (EDH) campaign, focused in particular on non-salaried workers.
      • Driving forward partnership opportunities with tax-preparation companies, higher education,  and other partners that reach at least 5 million potential 2020 voters, especially partners who serve traditionally marginalized communities. 
    • Draft in-depth outlines for each of the plan’s partnership priorities, including theory of change, issue-area briefs, target relationships, and goals.
    • Manage team’s budget and resources.
  • Drive Partnerships Implementation + Execution
    • Develop, manage, and oversee partnership implementation, including research, messaging, relationship development, and serving as the primary point of day-to-day contact.
    • Source, build, cultivate, and leverage long-term relationships with partners, the press, and other stakeholders in key positions.
    • Field incoming opportunities with companies interested in the Vote.org premium toolset. Manage client contracts and onboarding as needed, and/or manage a staff member to do this as team grows.
    • Collaborate with partner organizations and contractors engaged in efforts related to the mission.
    • Work closely with other Vote.org staff, partner organizations, and contractors to pursue educational, communications, and PR strategies nationwide.

You’ve developed high-impact strategic programs, then pitched and implemented each to achieve a specific, impactful objective. You make a  great salesperson, but you’d rather sell democracy.
  • You move fluidly from strategy to execution. You appreciate the big picture and feel inspired to set a bold vision, but you know it's all in the details. You manage projects fluidly, fiercely prioritize, and track timelines, data, and information in an organized and systematic fashion. You don't drop balls, miss deadlines, or forget to respond to someone's inquiry - and you’re not afraid to roll up your sleeves to do the work. 
  • You’re a systems thinker. You evaluate and prioritize potential partnerships by considering the underlying structures of a problem. You build inclusive strategies that are research-backed, address chronic challenges, and have a clear theory of change. 
  • You are a gifted speaker, and an even stronger listener. You’re comfortable in conversation with a variety of stakeholders, from Fortune 500 CEOs to the Washington Post, to a team of engineers. You can translate ideas across audiences and modes of communication in an organized, thoughtful way.
  • Creative problem solving fires you up. When faced with a mountain, you know there are plenty of ways to climb it. You’re not dissuaded by challenges. In fact, you’re energized by them and by all of the creative approaches you might take to solve them. You build structure out of chaos, but you believe nimble systems > bureaucracy any day.
  • You leverage meaningful relationships to get things done. A relationship-builder at heart, the people you work with trust that you leverage relationships to get things done in a mutually beneficial, non-transactional way. You hold others to account, challenge assumptions, and support the people you engage in the pursuit of our shared goals. 
  • CRM is your favorite set of letters. You juggle dozens of active relationships by staying organized, transparent, and communicative, internally and externally. You rarely drop balls, and others would describe you as someone who follows up with them to follow up with you.
  • You plug in. You’re well versed in the landscape of social good programs, corporate social responsibility, nonprofit impact evaluation, and campaigning. You stay on top of which companies and organizations are launching which commitments to impact, and always get up to speed quickly.
  • You excel on a small, start-up team. Start-up culture is not only familiar to you - you love it. You are flexible, comfortable with ambiguity, have a quick bounce-back time after a setback, and get energy from building the plane as you fly it.
  • You’re high impact, low-ego, and kind to yourself and others.

 

Role Qualifications

  • The qualifications below are required to succeed in the role:
    • Minimum 7+ years experience in partnership management, designing impact programs, and/or issue advocacy.
    • Demonstrated experience sourcing and cultivating relationships with corporate, organizational, grassroots, and media partners.
    • Experience managing large and high-visibility projects with cross-functional interdependencies. 
    • Strong writing, oral communication, and research skills, capable of driving programmatic messaging and meeting with key partners without significant oversight.
    • A clear understanding of diversity and inclusion, and how this impacts your work.
    • Ability to manage multiple projects, juggle priorities, and direct non-direct reports or consultants.
  • Top candidates will also have experience with one or more of the following:  
    • Working on social good, CSR, policy, or community teams at corporations; 
    • Working in nonprofits or social businesses on program design or relationship management; 
    • Acting as a program spokesperson with media outlets; 
    • Significant responsibility over the development and execution of a successful issue advocacy campaign;
    • Building cross-sector relationships and/or a rolodex of key contacts nationwide; 
    • Overseeing staff, consultants, and budgets; 
    • Experience on campaigns, involving voting or election-related issues;
    • Maintaining a sense of humor.
